A shared obsession

When you have kids, you wonder how much of you is going to transfer to them. You hope that they get your good, and that your bad is skipped over (or, maybe not your BAD, but those parts of yourself that aren’t your favorites – even something as simple as, “I hope my kids don’t have my super dry skin,” or, “I hope my offspring likes to sleep in as much as their dad.”) It’s so wonderful when something you really love is transferred down through the generations.

My whole family, but Hazel and me in particular, share an obsession. I swear it’s genetic.

Sometimes, it threatens to take over the house.

I’m talking, folks, about reading.

Books. They are everywhere. Shelves stacked to the gills, books spilling off of the children’s beds as they shift and move at night.

Piles everywhere.

We have a rule: no reading at dinner. (Breakfast and lunch are different stories, and Hazel, in particular, is always reading at those two meals).

I recently discovered the Overdrive app through the library, and I am head-over-heels for it. I generally have 2-3 books going at once, and make sure I have at least 1/2 hour to an hour a day to read. The kids are always reading, carrying books around, flipping through them. Each takes between 5-5000 to bed with them every night.

I’ve also recently started using Goodreads to keep track of what I’ve read, and what I want to read. Find me there to check out what I’ve been obsessed with lately. Be forewarned: I love a good post-apocalyptic fiction series, and supernatural-themed books rank high on my lists. Female authors and strong female characters a BIG bonus.

  1. I definitely have the read gene too although I haven’t been doing as much recently as usual and I am not even close to achieving what you can pack in a day. Sic-Fi, apocalyptic novels with a twist and murder mysteries are my favorites but a good romance is or any well written story will do. This is a lovely post!
