It’s that time of year again, time for the annual Socks on Vacay/Summertime Sock Knitting Extravaganza that Lorajean from Knitted Wit and I host! This year is very different, because we are living in a reality none of us could have forseen even a few short months ago.
Because of the coronavirus/Covid-19/the pandemic we are currently experiencing, our collective summertime vacation plans are likely not going to happen, not to put too fine a point on it. But, it’s all in service to a flatter curve and a wider range of healthy individuals, which all thinking people of conscience want. So, to support the world we are now living in, our Socks on Vacay promotion is ALSO a Socks on Staycay promotion. Because this summer might be aaaaallll about our backyards.
On May 1st, I released Socks for Busy B’s 5 (!!), and these are some super fun patterns, friends. As in previous years, all three patterns are easily memorizable, the perfect things to work on as you watch a favorite show or keep an eye on your kids as they splash in a sprinkler in your backyard, or indulge in a Zoom happy hour with friends. I also added Bobo’s Socks to the mix, a super fun and fast toe-up DK-weight sock pattern that was released right before the pandemic descended.
A quick overview of Socks on Vacay/Staycay, for those who haven’t taken part in past years (the rules are simple):
- You must make socks between Friday, May 1st and Monday, September 7th, 2020 (aka May 1st and Labor Day here in the US);
- socks must be made with Knitted Wit yarn;
- socks must be made using one of Shannon Squire’s sock patterns; and
- you must share photos on Instagram and use #socksonvacay #socksonvacay2020 #socksonstaycay #socksonstaycay2020 AND tag us (@knittedwit and @shannonsq).
- This year, we’ll also have a Ravelry component, run in our ShannaJean Hangout Space, so join us there!
Prizes include download codes and sock yarn, and because we’re us, we aren’t entirely sure what kinds of things we’ll be looking for during the KAL. To give you an idea, for the last couple of years, we gave prizes for:
- Most Exotic Photo
- Most Finished Socks
- Coolest Place to Knit
Among other things. Just knit socks, and have fun doing it, and you’ll be entered to win!
National Parks yarn-wise, we’re doing something a wee bit different this year, in order to support our LYS partners: National Parks yarn will ONLY be available through our LYS partners, so you can contact one of them to order. Added bonus: when you purchase through an LYS, you are eligible for the LYS-only incentives (an awesome patch if you purchase 4 skeins from a shop over the summer, and the same design in an enamel pin if you purchase 16 skeins over the summer).
Brand new at quilting., have quilted some baby hats. Is making socks above my level? Will there be videos as we go along?
